WWE SmackDown Episode 1488 had all to do that would keep wrestling enthusiasts glued for a whole evening. The episode aired live from an arena packed with fans and featured gripping storylines, dramatic confrontations and awe inspiring in ring action that had fans buzzing. The WWE Universe got to witness what was a night to remember, packed high stakes and surprise twists all around.
Opening Segment: Setting the Stage
WWE SmackDown Episode 1488 General Manager Adam Pearce began this one in the ring announcing that the main event of the night would be a Triple Threat Match to determine the number one contender to the WWE SmackDown Universal Championship. The crowd erupted as the fan favorites dotted back to back with Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens, and Austin Theory. And with Pearce’s announcement, the stage was set for an episode full of high drama, fierce competition and, of course, lots of taking spoils and just shaving thought deeds done.
Match 1: The Usos vs. The Street Profits
The first match of the night saw The Usos take on The Street Profits in a non-title tag team match. Both teams were a masterclass in teamwork and athleticism. The match was fast paced, innovative double team maneuvers, and near falls. In the end, though, The Usos were awarded a hard fought victory, thanks largely in part to their superior chemistry and tactical strategy. The win only strengthened them as the top tag team in the division.
Backstage Drama: Tensions Mount
After that layer was added to layer upon layer of intrigue. Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley continued their back and forth with Ripley confronting Flair, and now we’re left to think their clash will happen at some premium live event in the future. Jey Uso’s long and tense talk with Sami Zayn teased cracks in The Bloodline. But these storylines also led in a new direction, and showed motivations of what it was that propelled WWE’s most important superstars.
Match 2: Women’s Division Showcase
The highlight of the night was Bianca Belair facing off against Bayley in a grudge match powered by bad blood from recent weeks. As Belair countered Bayley’s cunning tactics, she displayed the athleticism and strength we’ve seen from her. Belair bounced back just enough to deliver a dramatic KOD (Kiss of Death) leaving the crowd stunned and earning the pinfall victory. After, Damage CTRL came out and did a surprise attack against Belair, but it left Belair outnumbered but unbroken.
Promo of the Night: Bray Wyatt’s Return
In the middle of the ring, Bray Wyatt made his return in one of the episode’s highlights delivering a cryptic promo. Wyatt stood under the flickering lights and eerie music before addressing the WWE Universe to prop up an upcoming reckoning. His enigmatic words and haunting presence kept fans guessing, but also stoked speculation about who would be his future targets and he’d be telling their stories. It was yet another example of WWE’s ability to blend theatre with interesting storytelling.
Match 3: Intercontinental Championship Clash
In a hard hitting, brutal match, Gunther defended his Intercontinental Championship against Sheamus. It was the same old story of trademark resilience and sheer physicality from both competitors. Both of the titans used chops, suplexes and stiff strikes, echoing through the arena. Though Sheamus gave it his all, and had a couple of close calls, it was the monolithic Germanic might of Gunther that retained the belt after a devastating power bomb. There was respect between the two warriors, which was evident with the home crowd giving the pair a standing ovation post match.
Main Event: Triple Threat Match
Triple Threat Match landed on its hype Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, and Austin Theory all fought it out in a high octane tag team match. Each superstar brought their unique style to the contest: Rollins’ agility and technical skill, Owens’ relentless offense, and Theory’s cunning tactics. And it was an exhilarating encounter with high risk maneuvers and surprise counters near falls. With just moments remaining, Rollins put Owens away with a Curb Stomp and gained the pinfall to become the number one contender for the Universal Championship. Rollins stood tall and the crowd erupted in celebration feeling he dethroned the reigning champion.
Closing Moments: A Surprise Twist
When it looked like the show was over, Universal Champion Roman Reigns took center stage alongside Paul Heyman. Standing dead center in the ring, Reigns stood in an intense staredown with Rollins an obvious sign that they weren’t done with one another. SmackDown went to black, with tension creeping between fans and an eagerness to see the next episode.
